Home Office Blue Skies or Just Plain Blues!

Judy and I have a home based business and our office is roughly a 10’ X 10’ converted bedroom.  Imagine what it’s like to spend at least 12 hours a day with your wife sitting back to back in this space, with a large work table to wrap our products, two computers and desks, shelves, files…you get the idea.  Now add our dog Snowball, who is my shadow and resides in his bed most of the day as we work, when not begging for food or attention.  Ideal you say.  How nice it is to be with your wife all day you say…NOT!

To work in this environment, one must look at several things, including; the individual personalities, the fact that we live in Arizona, with its approximately 350 days of sunshine and blue skies, and yet we are inside for almost the entire day tripping over each other and any items that we are working on, etc.  Ahhhhh, for the good old days of commuting to the office in New York City.

Well, and although I think Judy would disagree with me somewhat, I wouldn’t trade this setup with my former commute under any circumstance.  Judy is an A type personality, very thorough, diligent and an extremely “don’t put off for a few hours, what could be done five minutes ago” person.  I, on the other hand, would consider myself as “Tucson Lay Back” and would gladly accept putting off something.  I love the fact that there is no commute (which in my former life could take up to 3 hours to complete one way), and can easily slip back into bed when things are slow.  Also, the dress code is extremely lax, a huge plus.  Got the picture?  The downside to all this is the fact that because our work ethics are, shall we say, different (I am being nice) there are plenty of occasions where Judy and I are in conflict.  Judy also gets very nervous should the business fall off, there are no prospect calls, or some problem arises.  Also, the fact that there is no steady paycheck nor frequent people contact sometimes takes its toll on her.

However, it should be noted that the aforementioned Snowball, just loves the setup and is happy having someone around for most of the day.  I, for one, agree with him and love “this dog’s life”.   The moral to the story is that working from home is truly a personal decision that is not agreeable to everyone and requires a lot of soul searching.  Working with your wife, although nice, is also something one might want to consider.
